McLaren Vale is one of South Australia's oldest and most picturesque regions, nestled between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the white, sandy beaches of the Gulf of St Vincent. It offers exceptional wines and regional produce all set amongst rolling vineyards, a rugged coastline and a charming collective of villages including Willunga, Clarendon, Kangarilla, Sellicks, Port Willunga, McLaren Flat and the township of McLaren Vale.
The unique marriage of a wine region and beach lifestyle has created a melting pot for all things culinary, vinous and artistic. McLaren Vale has a rich history and is widely recognised as one of Australia greenest wine regions because of its ongoing water use efficiency strategies and commitment to environmental sustainability. There is substantial climatic variation throughout McLaren Vale, due to varying exposure to the cooling influence of the nearby ocean. Site selection and the matching of site to variety are all-important; Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Semillon, and Chardonnay all do very well in the appropriate location.
Barossa Valley is one of the most historic wine producing regions in Australia. Originally established by the British the noted German influence came from Lutheran emigrants from Prussia. German was in fact the preferred language until the early 1900. There are now 6th generation grape growing families and Barossa is home to Australia largest collection of old vines with many blocks of still productive vines dating back to the 1860. Langmeil Freedom vineyard (planted in 1843) is likely the oldest Shiraz vineyard in the world.
There is a long tradition of fortified wine production but nowadays this is a much smaller part of the overall production in Barossa, however, the amazing wines still made at Seppeltsfield are testament to the world class nature of this style. Shiraz is Barossa star performer but Grenache, Mourvedre and Semillon all produce exciting wines and Riesling grown in the Eden Valley is an Australian classic.
Langhorne Creek has a history of viticulture dating back to 1860 and is known for its flat, river delta landscape. One of the best-kept secrets in Australian viticulture, Langhorne Creek is one of Australia's oldest wine regions. The region is nestled among gum trees on the Bremer and Angas rivers. Langhorne Creek is less than a two-hour drive from Adelaide. Here you can escape to picturesque vineyards and spend a day among the vines tasting sumptuous food, drinking premium wines and meeting the winemakers. Langhorne Creek Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are valued contributors to many red blends and a number of Australia larger winemakers are represented in the region.
There are an increasing number of smaller wineries now based in the region. These wineries are enhancing the diversity of the region, bringing new levels of quality and innovation. The main wine styles produced include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, which are also commonly used as blends.
